Domaine Rene Leclerc, Gevrey Chambertin, 1er Cru Les Champeaux, 2019, 13.5% abv.
Nose: good red fruit, raspberries, strawberries, red fruit punch, red fruit jam, tart, hint of aluminum, with air time the fruit becomes spiced fruit, spiced and smoked paprika, hint of tumeric, light cardamon.
Palate: light body, initial palate is light red fruit juice, some butter, mid palate shows more strawberries from the red fruit mix and orange juice but these red fruits start to attenuate after the first one or two glasses, then some chalk, cobblestones, tonic water blended with tree leaves, on subsequent sips several wood-oriented forest products are more prevalent like old wood, moist bark, "smell" of old pine cones and dead leaves, back palate is a bit nutty, more mineral elements, feint chlorine, hint of "chocolate" but I can see this going as bitter bark as well.
Finish: short, a bit dry, nutty, mostlt candied raspberries, dried citrus peels, supported by cut celery, steamed kohlrabi, hint of orange juice.
Vernacular: nose is well defined red fruit, palate is light bodied, structured, showing good moderate acidity, minimal tannins, and transitions to good minerality and forest products but I wouldn'tvallnit sous bois. Finish is short and dry.
After a slew of recent disappointments, I am so happy to have tried this. Still, several issues with balance and complexity, but almost there and a great daily! I like 2019. Jasper Morris of Inside Burgandy gave this a 90 in 2021. Got this for KRW₩199,000 or about USD$150 in Busan, South Korea.
