I have no idea what to do with this open floor plan. My original color was SW Accessible Beige (which I liked), but it needed refreshing so I went with Natural Linen by SW. I feel like it’s too beige/peach and it’s just not what I want.

Everything seems so flat and boring. I like neutral colors and wouldn’t mind repainting a different color, but it needs something else.

What’s the secret sauce for putting a room together? Help! I’m open to all suggestions. The furniture will stay, but I can change the rug. I’d love to replace the flooring because it’s kind of a bossy color, but that’s not in the cards right now.

I think this looks nice and elegant. A pop of color in an accent rug or chair may spice it up a bit?

  2. You need more color. Doesn’t need to necessarily be wall paint. Maybe go with drapes that are not white. The Grey rug is too small and would be better with some color. A rug under the dining room table would also be nice. Look for some more interesting frames for the art above the mantel and maybe switch the painting to be above the mantel and the flower prints to be above the couch?

  3. I think the paint looks fine. This space seems pretty cozy and relaxing.

    One painting above the fireplace.

Get a non-grey rug. I can’t tell if your rug is in the right direction or not. It should be paralleled with the couch.

I think the layout is a bigger issue. The tv placement is very odd (it’s closer to the dining space and not aligned with the couch). That sai, I understand how it ended up there instead of r/tvtoohigh if put above the fireplace.

Do you have another room where the tv could go?
Or maybe, are you open to downsizing the tv?

If I were to make a few affordable, simple changes to your room I‘d switch out the mattings on both fireplace pictures to a deep, muted plum colour. You can purchase the correct size for relatively cheap on etsy. The white matting is working against your room and making it flat and sucking the air out of it. This change alone will shift your room.

Next, I would invest in a few hardcover vintage books to sit below the table lamp in the corner of your room. This will create dimension and interest in your room as well as a cozy feeling.

I would also find a plum throw blanket for the couch along with some deeper blue and green throw pillows. Select blues and greens from the art behind the couch and over the fireplace to create a cohesive environment.

Lastly, I would redecorate your mantle with a few vintage hardcover books for one side, and opt for a taller, skinner vase on the other. Lamp cord covers could add a warm, cozy vibe as well.

You should be able to make all these changes for less than $200 and they may be small changes, but they’ll drastically transform your space.

If you want to spend more, I’d upgrade the living room carpet to a larger one that’s perhaps oval shaped and this will anchor that space overall.

It’s nice but it needs some color IMO Also, I would put larger art over the couch

To me, decorating is all about expressing who I am and what makes me happy. I love art and color so the rooms of my home and my furniture are neutral and I layer in the color with art and yes, some tchotchkes.

I think you have a gorgeous start. My advice is to add some pieces that bring in color and speak to your interests. I would also consider a slightly larger and perhaps more colorful picture for over the couch. To me, the current picture is nice but it leaves a lot of open wall space on either side.

The color is fine. But the objects (art, lamps, furniture) are mass produced and lack character. I see two matching art prints above fireplace, two sets of matching lamps, etc. Find things you really love and layer them into your home. That’ll help.
