Hi all,
Yesterday I hosted a burgundy tasting with friends. The usual format where my friends all chip in and I order the wines. Lineup and notes below:
Chardonnay
– La Chablisienne, Petit Chablis (2023): Light and refreshing as expected. 87/100.
Bouchard Pere et Fils, Beaune du Chateau (Premier Cru) (2021): Rich and round, with high viscosity. Butter, Vanilla, and stone fruit. High minerality. Medium finish. 90/100.
Alain Gras, Meursault ‘Les Tillets’ (2024): Powerful nose of hazelnuts and butter. In the mouth it is rich with notes of hazelnut, smoke, white flowers, and butter, with a strong mineral backbone. Even for a village level Meursault this young, this wine punches. The finish is long and lingering. Fantastic wine. 93/100.
Pinot Noir
– Bouchard Pere et Fils, Beaune ‘Les Greves’ (2018): When opened, this wine was tight and unapproachable. Tannins were firm. Nose was red fruit and stone. In the mouth, cherries and red fruit. Even after an hour opened this wine didn’t want to open up. It also didn’t have that typical Beaune Grève flinty character. This was either a poor bottle or it simply needs significantly more aging. The Domaine Vougeraie Beaune Greves I had last year blowed this out of the water. 88/100
Louis Jadot, Morey Saint Denis (2017): Colour was rusty red with translucent rim. Nose was rose petals, red fruit. In the mouth, leather, cherries with mineral and stone backdrop. Medium finish. Overall very elegant. 91/100.
Bouchard Pere et Fils, Gevrey Chambertin (2020): Decanted three hours. Colour is dark opaque purple. Very typical Gevrey. Good structure with dark fruits and plumb notes. Some tobacco and leather notes which should intensify with aging. Rich and intense, but still very young. Medium to long finish. 92/100.
The Meursault was my wine of the night. I have one more bottle of the Bouchard Beaune Les Grèves. I will wait a long time before opening.
