Julien Prélat is a grower producer in Côte de Bar in the southern part of Champagne. He works with all the permitted grapes and does several single variety bottlings, including a 100% Pinot Gris.
This cuvée is 100% Pinot Noir from a single plot planted in 1982. It is based on his Chantemerle wine with 10% Coteaux Champenois blended in. Full malolactic fermentation. Vinified in stainless steel and aged on lees. Disgorged in 2024. 1310 bottles produced.
In the glass it shows a light red hue, quite deep for a rosé Champagne.
The nose opens on red apple and apple skin, followed by lingonberry, cranberry and a touch of red currant. There is a clear autolytic character with notes of sweet bread and fresh yeast.
On the palate, fine and gentle mousse. Medium acidity. The red fruit profile carries through, but this is not about sweet strawberry fruit. There is a slight phenolic bitterness to the fruit that gives structure and grip, balanced by the softer, slightly sweet impression from the lees influence.
It needed some time in the glass to really show itself. Not a fruit driven, cimmediate rosé, but a more vinous and structured style. Very good, and definitely interesting.
