I’ve always been a fan of Rhone wines and of the GSM blend, and was excited to try the Beaucastel for a long time! So glad to be able to try the 09 vintage, which I’ve mostly read good things about.
- (honestly arbitrary scoring, compared to other wines I’ve tasted)
At opening: Nose: Jammy, slightly sweet, even hints of stewed fruits or even toffee. Garnet coloured. Didn’t expect it to be this jammy despite 09 being a warmer vintage. Palette: Slightly spicy – peppery notes are present from the Syrah grape, smooth to the palatte, medium acidity, medium tannins.
15-30 min: Much more pronounced secondary and tertiary notes – forest floor, mushroom, wet leaves. Higher acidity. Less drinkable during this time.
45-75 min: Gorgeous. Bouquet of floral, fruits and underlying secondary/tertiary notes – violet, plum, forest floor. Well balanced, smooth tannins, medium finish. Best during this time.
90 min: More singular and less expressive – dark fruits more dominant. Didn’t make it past 100 minutes as we’d finished the bottle already!
Was not disappointed and would gladly buy more bottles.
