This was truly phenomenal, and I liked it considerably more than the previous vintage I tasted, 2016 (also good, just less complete.) Both were very earthy, but this ’18 had a far better expression of fruit to stand up to all that earthiness.
A deep pool of pure fresh black cherry and maybe even some blue and black berries, leaning toward dark fruit but still with vivid clarity. Fresh root beer spices, sarsaparilla, licorice, nutmeg, and the aforementioned earthiness, sort of a mix of cedary forest floor and salinity, gentle sea breeze. Lots of excellent interplay. I’ve had more expressive and more energetic Pinot Noir but this felt like a beautiful, classical expression with lots of complexity and incredible beauty. Richness, complexity, and precision all together.
It could obviously age and continue to improve for a little while, but drinking gorgeously now. Truly great QPR around $65 and really cool that this winery seems to release the bottles with some light aging.
