Tenuta San Guido, Guidalberto, 2021, 13.5% abv.
TSG tasting at a local shop: Le Difese, Guidalberto, and Sassicaia. Second glass is the second wine of Sassicaia, Guidalberto, a 60% cabernet sauvignon and 40% merlot blend. Tech sheet says, "225-litre barriques made of partly French oak and a small part (5%) of American oak for a period of 15 months. Use of 40% of new wood, 40% of second passage wood and 20% in equal shares of third and fourth passage."
Nose: strong orange zest and orange jelly/candy, dried cherries, a good amount of cherry and orange popsicle, crystalized green grapes, frozen green grapes, with time it gets slightly nutty, with bread and light malt.
Palate: light body, entry is a musty grape juice, toasted cedar, and tart fruits bordering citrus, herbaceous-ness travels into the mid palate which is lightly floral, spciey, interestingly the fruits and fruit-derivatives go to the back of the bus but the orange citrus stays in the front seat, back palate shows light calcium, moderate iron or iron-rich soil/rocks, and the spice picks up a notch.
Finish: short, dry, saltine crackers, light dried orange peel.
Vernacular: nose shows primary and secondary products. Palate is light bodied, moderate acidity, minerality, and supple tannins. Finish is quite short reflecting the palate.
Too young as usual. Out of the three TSGs, this was the most acidic. James Suckling gave this a 93, Monica Lorner from Wine Advocate gave this a 94, and Bruce Sanderson from Wine Spectator gave this a 92 in 2023.
