This 2001 Fernando Remírez de Ganuza Rioja was an incredible find at my local wine shop, and for a price that likely represents its original cost, not the current market. A perfect way to celebrate my friend’s 29th birthday.
Deep ruby color with bricking throughout. Nose of leather, cedar, fig, mint, barleywine, plum, and blackberries. Palate of stewed cherries, strawberries, vanilla, dates, tobacco, and that appetizing dustiness that comes from 25 years of proper storage. Medium bodied, though that does not detract from its power or charm. Strong tannic presence, medium plus acidity; everything is as integrated as you could hope for. Simply a beautiful and textbook aged Rioja.
The cork unfortunately broke in half, and foolishly without my ah so, we had to pour around the debris. Lessons learned! After being open for four hours, the palate started to lose a little of its complexity. I would imagine this should be consumed within five years. Support your local wine store and don’t be afraid to poke around for what’s hiding in those dark corners!
