Rose (74% Mandilaria, 26% Savatiano) style of retsina from Attica.

No doubt both rose wines and retsina can be pretty polarising, and while this peculiar combination of the two probably won’t be winning any popularity contests, I very much enjoyed giving it a try and would recommend it to those with an open mind.

Upon opening a bouquet of dried woody winter herbs – think rosemary, sage and Christmas stuffing. With more air showed cranberry, strawberry and blood orange character. Spicy albeit short finish with white pepper and hints of sweet cinnamon. Rather full bodied and juicy with an earthy character.

With that heady sage stuffing character and cranberry notes this would make fine competition for the Christmas Pinot.

Tasting blind I would have had no clue this is retsina – it was perhaps somewhat reminiscent of a lighter, funky South African Cinsault.
