Rate my kitchen. What would you change? I have a £10k budget to fit a new kitchen but I don’t think this kitchen is completely terrible. So I could just upcycle the existing cabinets?
Naw it’s a good kitchen. $10k isn’t going to change the layout and I’d spend that money somewhere else. I’d cook there any day.
DontMessWithTrexes
I wouldn’t say ugly. Personally I’m not a fan of the backsplash – maybe something a bit more modern? I like the cabinets
Mithrandir_25
I’d change the crown moulding going across the hood vent. Run it from the front corner of each cabinet back to the wall. It’ll require two outside-corner cuts, but it’ll look better in my opinion.
elle_kay_are
I think it’s cute! I like the countertops and the backslash. Personally, I would change the light. Maybe it’s just the picture, but it seems pretty harsh. It’s really how you feel that matters, though. If you’re not happy in there, then yeah, make some changes. Otherwise, I would just focus on some wall art and decorations.
SaltTheRimG
Just change backsplash. Maybe handles too
ksgar77
I would want more upper cabinets. Remove them around the vent…put open shelves on the right and a corner cabinet on the left. Then add cabinets to the left wall with an opening over the sink. The backlash could be updated, but overall I like the colors and materials.
Necessary_Reality_50
The problem is that awful light. Change it and get some counter lights
beamer88888888
Different backsplash. Take it all the way up the blank wall. What’s with the trim across the range hood? I feel it could go. It looks weird.
future_lard
No it is a perfectly nice kitchen. Biggest problems are the tiles which feel a bit dated and the lack of a window
Guavachapstick
I like everything except the light

if it works for you..its good. if it doesnt work for you..its ugly
pizzasong
– enclose tops of cabinets with small set painted to match – replace backsplash and run up behind the hood and either on the full wall (left side) OR add a floating shelf above
bluemesa7
I can see the repainting brush marks on the cabinets. I like the color, but need repairing done correctly. I like the backsplash.. but the kitchen light need an upgrade that does spreads light evenly
Jessirossica
I would never yuck someone’s yum but yeah I really don’t like it. Functionally seems good though
Jlx_27
The lichting is horrible, in a kitchen light shouldnt come from one source, it should be spread out over the space to spread the light evenly.
Centennial911
No , why would you even say that? It looks great 👍
Cystonectae
I’d change the backsplash and the flooring. Backsplash into something a bit more modern and that isn’t pink, and the flooring to something that doesn’t match the countertops (ideally tile because it’s a kitchen). Then I’d add under-cabinet lighting. Led strips with diffusers work well and are easy to install.
macspriggy
I like it! I have a kitchen with a similar layout. For functionality we added open shelves with a dish drying rack above the sink, it helps us keep our counter space open and adds storage.
weasel999
New backsplash, some art, and a rug would work wonders.
ae314
It’s not ugly but I’d put something above the backsplash over the sink. Maybe cabinets like on the opposite wall or shelves, and if that’s not feasible then maybe some artwork.
MidwestMSW
Colors suck but seems good otherwise
Can the left wall come down to open it up? Or cabinets be added?
ThisIsAbuse
Its kinda nice. I mean if the cabinets went to the ceiling, and you left the hood area with no wood trim and tiled all the way up there it would improve. As others mentioned the light is very bad. But other wise I like the colors and tone for a small kitchen.
latihoa
Is there anything that bothers you about the layout or functionality? If not, I would make cosmetic updates only:
1) paint the cabinets, consider a lighter color for the uppers and darker for the lowers. Choose new handles or pulls.
2) change the backsplash to something less busy, lighter, that compliments the countertop.
3) remove the molding around the vent hood. It’s ok to leave the side cabinets.
4) consider a shallow shelf along the top of the backsplash over the sink. Something to make the blank space look intentional. Right now it looks like the cabinets are missing.
5) you don’t have a window, so make sure to choose colors that won’t make your kitchen look even smaller. Use light colors, far colors ok some places for dramatic effect.
6) replace the overhead light, perhaps an large LED unit with a frosted lens that will fill the space with diffused light. It would be more expensive but you could also replace it with can lights, even though I know some people hate them they are useful in a kitchen.
I see you’re in the UK, you may be able to refit an entire kitchen using stock IKEA cabinets, and reuse existing appliances and fixtures for your budget.

I would change the ceiling lights for something less distracting and add some light strips under the cabinets. It would go miles.
aquila-audax
The paint job on the cabinets is a bit rough. I’d be looking to fix that, the lighting and the backsplash (maybe something glossy in a continuous material?).
hotflashinthepan
I would change out that light and add under-counter lighting. Also some nice open shelves on the blank wall.
crujones33
Not at all. It looks clean and well-organized.
bobtheturd
The backsplash doesn’t fit but I like the rest of the kitchen!
nosecohn
It’s a slightly unusual combination of colors, but I wouldn’t say it’s ugly.
Better lighting would make a big difference at minimal cost.
slongtime
I think the warm colors of the countertop and backsplash don’t match the cooler tone of the cabinet. The lighting is a bit harsh. It’s not an ugly kitchen, but I don’t love it. I don’t think it needs a complete rework though, just some updates.
BerserkPotato
Lighting is bad here.
BerserkPotato
Cabinets should go up to ceiling. It’s collecting dust like that.
Hash_Tooth
It’s beautiful
Start with the light as others said.
I thinks it’s fine.
ccnclove
A nice high gloss white slim line tiled splash back I just imagined haha.
wardenclyffer
Not at all, it has a good color / surfaces combination. If it’s possible i would change the bell extractor for one hidden in a cabinet. Also would change doors for drawers under the faucet cabinets.
bent_my_wookie
Just get these, stick em under the cabinets and all the counters will light up amazingly well
and replace the overhead light to shine toward the ceiling so you don’t look at bulbs directly:
CuileannDhu
It’s nice. I think a new backsplash and different lighting would really freshen it. up
choppydell
Get floating shelves for sink wall
Silverliningsinla
Nope, like it!
Silverliningsinla
I’d take the piece of crown molding off the face of the range hood. We had the same thing and had it cut & placed long the cabinets…it’s a small, but good change & makes a big difference. Looks weird with it that way.
ElReverie
If there’s any way whatsoever to add a window, that’ll do it
