Agree! We just opened a tasting room and I’ve noticed a wonderful shift in the demographic. So much more free spirited approach to wine with millennial/ Gen z customers. Quality over quantity and a genuine interest in the methods of viticulture and low intervention wine making.

It’s a bummer some of it is spreading into natural wine too. Except elitism in this world comes in the form of an art school dropout with trust fund parents and a Carhartt-beanie gate-keeping the “better” natural wines wines as if they learnt it from a record store employee in the late 2000s. I’ve seen it too often.

When you do find a retail shop or a wine bar where the person really connects with you, allows you to lower your guard, shows you something that may not always be the thing that needs to move but introduces you to something rather unique or something you’d like, it’s so nice. Like the friend that’s sending you Spotify links and you know every song is killer.

Everyone should have that experience, most people don’t as they get cheap flawed natural wine they have to pretend they like since it’s inventory that needs to move.

Loved her article! Wine can be and still is a bit of a “boys club”, but with globalization and the internet people have access to so many amazing producers.

“if a consumer does not know or understand your product or see themselves in spaces where your market exists, they are less inclined to actually purchase it.” couldn’t say it any better.

Personally, I’ve noticed that in the states there is a bit of a barrier of entry into the wine world: it can be expensive and intimidating. Unless you’re from California or a wine producing are, there isn’t that much cultural exposure.

I notice that in Europe it’s different, my grandpa used to drink from his “bota de vino”, wine is super affordable, and it’s part of the culture. For 2 euro a class, it costs as much as a beer
