  1. Full gut job if it was my kitchen. Been there, done that. Cabinets, floors, counters, remove wallpaper and add recessed lighting.

tbh the layout is fine… has the classic work triangle. Without knowing what’s beyond the other walls, hard to say if you should open them up.

But otherwise, just tear everything out and replace in the same basic layout with modern materials/appliances.

If the wall to the right opens up to the dining room or living room, get rid of it. Make it a big island. Also that door opening is too small, open it up or move it a bit to the right.

I would do shaker cabinets with a big built in vent hood, a combination of upper cabinets with floating shelves. I would choose cabinet color and counter tops depending of the esthetic of the house and your personal style. I would do an accent backsplash and if you have hardwood throughout your house I’d run that throughout the kitchen.

To make the house look more custom think about recess lighting, pot faucet, farm house sink…these plus more ideas will elevate a simple kitchen remodel.

Definitely replace the backsplash. Wallpaper has got to go. Consider replacing the stainless sink with a farmhouse style sink. Butcher block counter tops if you can afford it and put up some lighting under the cabinets

    By different price levels:

Affordable/weekend job: give the cabinets a good scrub, and go at them with a nice paint. Replace the countertops. Replace the range hood with a newer designed stainless steel.

Are the fridge void and pantry cabinet the same width? If so, switch em. Only if the door against the wall will open enough for access though. Might have to wire a recipticle for it. Also might have to move the sink and cabinets 1.5″ to the right – no problem.

If you want, the cabinets look solid enough to reface. That costs maybe $3k, and can completely change the look of the cabinetry. It’s a 3-4 week lead time and maybe 2 days install.

Try refreshing the trim on the light with paint or maybe replacing the trim and light refractor.

You might be in the market for a new stove soon. Consider installing it in the pantry and having a dedicated cooktop with storage under. This would clean the lines somewhat, especially if you switch the spot for the fridge.

Beyond that how’s the light penetration? Could you use a sun tunnel to being some natural light in? You said there’s a hallway out the doorway what about knocking some holes in that wall above where the cabinetry ends to let natural language that through?

*Sorry gotta go to work, will come back and edit

The layout looks fine but everything is obviously dated. So I’d gut the place and start from scratch with a similar layout. A few things that I think would make it look awesome and more functional:

    * Increase the doorway opening and move it so the fridge doesn’t overlap it. Or, replace the fridge with a counter depth model.
    * Regardless of whether or not you replace the fridge, it will look so much better if it is flush with the cabinets and has a side panel. That will also make the cabinet above it way more useful. At our old house we had a huge cabinet above the fridge and it was a great place to store bulky items we didn’t use all the time like a crock pot, stand mixer, margarita mixer, etc.
    * Get taller cabinets that go to the ceiling, or at least have a smaller gap to the ceiling that you can fill with crown mouldings.
    * You could consider centering the sink and flanking it with upper glass door cabinets.
    * If you don’t have it already, under cabinet lighting is a very nice feature.
    * Speaking of lighting, I’d do a row of pot lights down the centre of the kitchen. Likely would only need three depending on the length of the room.

    1. Open up that wall – not a full wall removal, but widen that entry. The fridge seems to interfere with a comfortable passage and is limited to only a single person passing at a time. Wider opening is more welcoming and function when having larger dinner parties and guests are flying in and out.
    2. Remove wall paper.
    3. If the cabinets are still good, consider having them refinished. Unlike what other people are saying, it can be cheaper to refinish. Based on your orientation, i would go a matte white lacquer. This would work if you are aiming for a country-style kitchen. If you do, change the sink to a farm sink. Add upper and lower molding to enhance the height. It will make it seem like your kitchen is larger than it is.If a country/farm style kitchen is not your thing – replace all the doors to match your style.
    4. Replace counters and backsplash.
    5. Replace that floor.

I’d keep the fridge and knock that wall out. if you want to keep the layout and keep the cabinets you could probably paint them white. Butcher block countertop is a cheap alternative for a nice counter
