Having previously reviewed his ‘Poivre et Sel’ and the unfortunate news of his passing earlier this month, I decided to grab some more wine from Olivier Lemasson to review here.
**Olivier Lemasson, VDF Rouge “R”:** Blend of Grolleau, Gamay, Cabernet Franc, and Cot. Whole-cluster, semi-carbonic maceration between 10 and 20 days with all the grapes co-fermenting. The wine is aged in fiberglass vats and then bottled early in the following spring after harvest. Purchased from Wine Therapy in Manhattan.
Aromas of soft red chili flakes, cooked strawberries, blood oranges, and dried roses, this is a warm and inviting wine with its wonderful concentration and ripe nose. The tannins here have some grip but don’t hold on too tightly. Flavors of spicy cranberry chutney, tart raspberry, cooked strawberries, some cured meat as well with some authentic Hispanic seasonings. There is a crispness to this, it’s light to medium bodied with medium acid.

It’s just very unfortunate when you come across a producer who is clearly skilled at his craft and brings forth all the nuance that the grapes and vintage bring and it’s come at the time of his recent passing. Lemasson seemed like the type of producer I would happily grab more bottles of whenever I saw them around. The natural wine scene is worse off with him gone truthfully. Louis Dressner has one of my favorite portfolios in all of wine and I thought the tribute that Jules paid towards Olivier was very well written and poetic.
