Recently had the opportunity to enjoy a bottle of Bikicki’s 2018 Uncensored. The vineyards are located on the northern slopes of Fruska Gora in Serbia and are rich in nutrients, with volcanic rocks and limestone dispersed throughout. All of Bikicki’s wines achieve balance and elegance, utilising natural principles and minimal intervention under the guidance of Oskar Maurer, their technologist.
Uncensored, a single-varietal Red Traminer, was the highest-rated Serbian wine in the 2021 World Wine Awards, with 96 points (although I am not one to pick wines based off of awards/points). This wine was a true experience. I’ve had a handful of Serbian wine in the past but none like this. Filled with notes of dried orange peel, Mediterranean spices, ginger, honey and apricot. Minerality reminiscent of gunpowder follows through after the fruity notes. A firm tannic bite contrasts with the richness of the body and nose. Uncensored is a wonderfully unique wine that demonstrates the incredible potential of Serbian wine.
