100% Syrah by Hervé Souhaut, from Northern Rhône’s St Joseph area.

A very classic style of Syrah, with a rich nose at the opening that scared me a little. I like my wines to be lively, sometimes on the crest, this one started off very classic, with violets and rich blackcurrant. It kept this very silky and elegant style of Syrah, with a nice smoothness and actually remained quite fresh. The richness of the nose broke down a little with opening, becoming more floral with a light spice behind. The wine opened up also quite well with time, as I enjoyed it over 5-6 hours, without showing signs of breaking down or mousiness. Classic natural wine, with no flaws, just a free and pure juice.

Overall a very nice Syrah, probably picked at the limit of ripeness which brings this interesting richness and floral notes. I’d definitely say it’s a nice bottle to keep at home in case of a quiet evening with a good friend.

  2. Sounds great! I picked up a bottle of their Sainte-Epine a few months ago, wasn’t sure if I should be popping this now or give it a few years.

  3. One of my fav producers. I just had this one with a friend over a beef stew two weeks ago and really enjoyed it. Souteronne is also delicious, 100% gamay. The whites are also fantastic.

This is my favorite wine to pair with a leaner cut of steak like a filet. Absolutely crushable but elegant and refined at the same time. As enjoyable as Syrah gets in my opinion.
