We have a 2 story living room and we are trying to figure out what to put above the mantel. A painting is also nice but it's much harder to find a painting that looks great and is the right size.

Between the mirror and clock, which one do you like more?

i’m not a huge fan of mirrors… so i will go with clock

Have you considered artwork instead of a clock or mirror?

I use mirrors if the room is lacking in natural light or I am reflecting something attractive. Neither seems to be the case here. A clock is fine but doesn’t have much personality. I’d aim for art, even a framed poster, of something that is meaningful to you, or makes you happy. A forest landscape if you like hiking, a city scene if you love the city, an abstract block of colors you like….

I guess out of the two, the clock. But i think a large piece of artwork may be better

Neither, I’d go with an actual piece of art

That clock style was popular in the 90’s.

Whatever you choose, please center it

Neither? I dislike the clock more tbh. Looks home-goods-y.

What is your style? People here can suggest great art with some more info. Printing and framing doesnt have to be much more than a mirror or gigantic clock.

Look I’m just glad it’s not a tv going up there 🙏

That style clock was never great-why does it need to be so big? But now it’s also about 15 years since Joanna Gaines was putting them in every house on Fixer Upper. Even she’s moved on. I think some other metal art could be cool, but the clock isn’t it. A mirror is a safe and budget friendly choice. Just make sure that whatever it is reflecting is something you want to look at. I would consider the mirror a placeholder for while you and try something with more personality and presence that fits the space.

This clock was in 95 percent of staged homes when I was house hunting and makes me think of that every time. Team mirror (really, team artwork).

Both look extremely “empty soulless house from 2010 HGTV” so please please please get some color, some art, some big tall plants (in a well draining pot on wheels that you can push outside to water correctly), and a rug that isn’t beige.

I wouldn’t use either one since I can’t read the clock and a mirror that high shows nothing interesting, plus the mirror is too plain. But if these represent what you like, the clock is at least somewhat interesting.

I have friends with a space this big, who over two years of steady effort got all their nerd out and onto their walls, and it’s fun to be in their spaces. They also have a clock somewhat like this, but on a brick background which makes it even less useful to me as a clock LOL.

I personally like the clock. But I’m begging you whatever you choose: clock, mirror, artwork… center it! (I’m assuming this was done with AI, and it missed that assignment 🤣😭).

Of those two choices I would go with mirror but overall I would go with a (centred) piece of artwork – something original and/or meaningful.

You can always make your own art! Get a canvas in the right size and some acrylic paint and make something abstract. Then you have something unique and you can bring some fun color in, plus it’s not expensive!

  19. Status-Target-6490

I think artwork would brighten the space and add much needed color

  20. WrongKindOfWant

I love it! Proportion, scale, color palette, 9/10 for me. I’d add something larger on the hearth but this looks cool as heck.

Definitely the clock as it looks more decorative than a plane mirror
