I found these two bottles in the back of a fridge while visiting my grandma. I couldn’t find too much on these wines but would love to know more if anyone has some more information.
1995 Springbok Cabernet Sauvignon: This one had some damage to the cork, and I was expecting a glass of vinegar, but it had a sliver of life left in it. On the nose, I was getting leather, grass clippings and hint of citrus. On the pallet, I got lots of leather and tobacco but there was the slightest whisper of fruit.
1993 Brolio Chianti Classico: Somehow after 30+ years in the fridge the cork came out in one piece with a normal corkscrew. On the nose, baking spices, plums, blackberry, collard greens topped off with a heavy musky smell. On the pallet I was picking up blackberry concentrate, zesty citrus and an overwhelming metallic taste.
This was a fun experience. While I wouldn’t consider these wines drinkable anymore, I was still surprised it wasn't just a glass of brown colored vinegar, and they still had the smallest amount of life left in them.
