I’d like to get another few years out of my living room rug, but most of the tassels have become unbraided, giving it a bedraggled vibe. It occurred to me today that maybe I could… cut the off? Will that look chic and intentional, or will the stubby nubs look even more stupid? I figured I’d ask here before committing with the scissors. Many thanks!

Nooooooo… Don’t do this. Just tuck them under. We do this when we run our robo vacuum.
why not add fresh tassels or sew on a new trim? You could cut off the old and on top of whats left sew on new. Here’s a video link to someone adding new trim. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=16UIm4lMB3I](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=16UIm4lMB3I)
I’ve cut off old fringe before, and depending on the rug and fabric, it may look ok or not. Usually rugs have an edge of some sort.
I would. Where are you cutting? Looks like there’s a decent couple of stitching lines so it shouldn’t unravel too much if you cut outside of them.
I think you should ask a professional, but to see if you like it, follow u/SallyKimballBrown’s advice and tuck it underneath.

Should you choose to take the plunge, I would not cut it right at the edge (red line). Once you unbraid it all I would cut it at the blue line or a bit longer. Make it an intentional short fringe.
Maybe try unbraiding all of them and seeing if that looks better before cutting them.
Just braid it like it was.
I would. 👍🏻
Yes. I did it on a rug and have never regretted it.
I’ve done this to towels, scarves, and smaller throw rugs. I agree with JPetunia. An intentional short fringe would look more “natural” and be less “eye catchingly what’s up with their rug?” than cutting completely off.
