La Gerla
Brunello di Montalcino
2018
Simply fucking lovely.
Big Pinot strikes again.
Violet, Fennel/Sweet Anise & Truffle kick the party off with this delightful Brunello.
Complex, but so defined that you can sit there and pick everything up. Clarity of flavour is key and this has it in abundance.
Dark cherry and red fruit sit under the savouriness on the nose but the sweet anise is so prominent. You don’t care because it’s lush.
I didn’t have time to let it sit because there was two of us on the bottle & we’d places to be.
Massive gaminess introduced itself with a calm, cool intro with a little air. Like a roast squab jumped into my glass.
Structure needs to be discussed.
Lean, not light.
Pushing to medium bodied.
Amazing, integrated acid with soft, plush tannins. Alcohol is barely noticeable at 14.5% which is a testament to how easy to drink this is. Not as bold as I prefer usually, but it made up for it ten times over.
Soft, supple red fruit on entry. Anise is present and carries through all the way to the finish where it’s rounded out and bound by the savoury/earthy notes. Dank cherry stops by for a cup of tea on the way home and refuses to leave. Slight minerality but I had to go searching for it.
Someone on my last note said “Iron fist in a velvet glove” – This showcases it perfectly.
This is such an approachable, gorgeous wine.
Big fuckin’ Pinot 🤘🏼
