I’m having a bit of an issue with windows in my daughter’s room. The Roman shades we installed have a bit of a gap on either side and it still lets in a lot of light in the morning. She is having trouble sleeping past a certain time in the morning because of all the light.
I have been considering adding curtains, but the space between the window edge and the wall is really small and I fear it would look strange. I was thinking champagne color velvet light blocking curtains with gold curtain rods. Is this possible given the narrow space on the sides? Also, most curtain panels are at least 50” which would leave a lot of extra fabric since the rods will need to be relatively short.
Are there any other light blocking options? I know there is window cling film, but I am trying to not completely block the view out the window.

I would do curtains with the rod that wraps around the sides. Ideally, 6 inches on each side but if it’s too narrow you can just do a few inches. I have insomnia and mounting the rod high and wide has helped a ton with light leaking in.
Could you do one long curtain rod in the middle and then just leave it parted right at the picture frame?
nice
Just buy two panels, put one long curtain rod at the top and pull one panel to each side when opening. I suggest getting longer curtains and raising the curtain rods closer to the ceiling to make the room taller
Edit: Or do 3 panels one panel in the middle two on the outside of each window for aesthetic purposes lol
What about new Roman shades that are bigger and cover the gap? It’ll be more expensive than adding curtains but I wouldn’t do curtains in toddler’s room for safety, can’t imagine my toddler not pulling and attempting to swing on them(!). We have blackout Roman shades from ShadeStore and they were installed in such a way that not an ounce of light gets in. Love them.
Definitely do longer, I usually do 90-96inches. It just helps give some height to the room.
What about a valance with side panels?
What if you added some additional trim around the window to cover the light cracks? It would seal in the shades and could be removed when she is old enough to be trusted with curtains.
