I've been on a dessert wine kick recently and was pleased to find this on the menu at Park Tavern in San Francisco.
Ordered a half bottle to round out dinner and drank alongside a pistachio dessert.
This wine is 100% Vespaiola, grown in the Breganze Hills in Veneto, Italy.
According to the winemaker, the grapes are dried in a "special room" for four months to concentrate flavors and sugars, then aged for a year in French oak barriques, 1/3 new, 2/3 used.
The result is a lovely dessert wine that feels somewhere in-between a Sauternes and a Tokaji.
Picked up notes of peach, apricot marmalade, honey, vanilla, and bright flowers.
On the palate, nice acidity balances out the sweetness in the wine.
I have a feeling this can age nicely, but was really happy to continue expanding my palate in the world of dessert wines!
91+ points (on a dessert wine scale).
