For those unfamiliar, this is a Pinot Noir from Burgundy, France, the classic homeland of the grape. Nuits-St.-Georges is the name of the specific village it comes from, and “Clos Des Porrets St. Georges” is the name of the specific *vineyard* it comes from (which is ranked “Premier Cru”, the second highest rank.) More importantly, it’s made by the team at Henri Gouges, a producer known for excellent Nuits St. Georges wines in particular.

My first experience with Gouges and WOW- pretty magical stuff, clearly all about nuanced complexity, but with very little “austerity”, which can be a pitfall of these old-school burgs. In other words, very serious wine, but very easy to love.

So alive at 10 yrs- young even, but not too young at all- wild amounts of pure black cherry liqueur and that dead classic forest floor thang- not leathery or dried-out whatsoever. Just deep and earthy. It was also showing a pure smoked meat note that felt very Gevrey, but more foresty, if that makes sense.

Palate still shows loads of tannin, but it’s superfine, and although the acidity is certainly high, cutting through the concentrated red and black cherries and meaty textures, it’s not at all tart or puckery.

Definitely closer to a serious, structured, hard-edged Pinot than a sultry elegant one, but it’s aged to the perfect degree for the style, and as a lover of younger Pinot, it could easily go longer. Listened to some dungeon synth while we drank it, lol.
