You could put a few plants or small framed pictures

Fight your instincts to decorate that spot. If that stairwell feels bare, you can always add millwork for the bottom of the walls or some kind of hanging pendant

I would wallpaper it or hang a large painting thats just a bit smaller than it.

It’s pretty hard to reach but I do have one piece of art.

The back story: when my son was in kindergarten, his teacher was quite concerned that he wasn’t coloring between the lines. Apparently this was an indicator that he’d be bad at math. This was absurd —my kid was just being ultra creative and she was holding him back, IMO. I’m also a professional graphic artist, so I had opinions. So this one piece of art was hung over the stairwell that he walked down every morning to go to school.

BTW—he graduated with a BFA in theatre technology and is a technical designer for Broadway set pieces. His math skills are just fine. 🙄

My grandparents had an authentic kimono up in a space like that.

I have the same layout.  I dont decorate that area but did hang some art along the wall opposite the handrail to give it some life.

I think seasonal decor, like wreaths, would be so cute there though.

Nothing imo. It’s risky if it falls down.

Yeah, it can be left blank, but if it’s a vertical surface it’s also kind of perfect for art or a wall hanging plant (if there’s adequate light). I’ve even seen people put book/display shelves in this kind of space (when it’s decently accessible and not too high). Whatever you feel works. You can always change it.
