My fiance and I are moving into this beautiful, single family home in a few months and we are completely overwhelmed with how one even decorates a whole home cohesively.

Context: we are super fortunate to be able to rent from my parents. This is actually the home I grew up in and it's been rented out for the past 20 years. The last tenants did a serious number on the place (hardware ripped off, appliances stolen, busted windows, huge messes, etc). These photos are after months of DIY renovation efforts, and there's still a lot of work to be done – see ivy vine as an example (we are removing all the ivy).

Because we are renting from family, we have the opportunity to customize how we want, which is super exciting after years of renting and roommates, but also incredibly overwhelming.

I'd call our preferred style more boho/eclectic and we'll definitely have lots of plants because of all the natural light. I'll be utilizing thrift stores/FB marketplace and my DIY skills.

I'm looking for any advice (or styling suggestions as well) on how one makes a plan when decorating a whole home. My first thought was go room by room, but the first floor is very open. Right now a lot of the hardware is mismatched and I plan to make them uniform at least in individual rooms. The walls are textured (floor and ceiling) but we have a sprayer for painting. The high ceiling rooms will be a challenge but it's doable. All cabinets will need to be sanded and repainted, the kitchen counter will be replaced with granite eventually…

There are so many choices to make and I don't want to end up with a mismatched looking house. Any guidance from more experienced home decorators would be very much appreciated, especially common mistakes to avoid.

Thank you!
