I need help deciding what type/color/shape/size rug to get for this room. We have worked hard on getting it to where it is, but I think a rug will make it feel finished (even though we still have some things we wanna do to the room eventually).

Some context: My husband added the shelving and cabinets on either side of the fireplace after we moved in. Don’t worry, I am still working on styling these shelves, but any suggestions you have are appreciated. I would like to get rid of the wood stove eventually and just add in an electric or gas fireplace that doesn’t protrude the way the wood stove does. I would love to remove the fan and Track lighting and just have one nice light fixture in the center above the coffee table instead. I also think eventually I want to do something with the stone of the fireplace whether that is just a little German grout technique or lime washing or something. I think we’ve done a great job of warming and cozying up the space but it still feels kind of unfinished. I think Rug and a some nice shoe shelving will help.

ANYWAY with all that in mind – thoughts on a rug for this room??

Adding a photo of what the room looked like when we first purchased this house, for reference of how far it has come lol! Also, disregard all of the shoes and boxes… Still working on how to best manage our entryway, which is basically the same room as this fireplace room.

I would personally lean into some rust-type color. It would go well with the couch (which I love btw).

For a room with built-ins flanking a fireplace and a stone surround, the most important thing before picking color is getting the size right – you want a rug that anchors the whole seating area, so at minimum the front legs of your sofa should sit on it. A rug that only fits under the coffee table will float awkwardly.

On shape: rectangle almost always works better than round or oval in a living room arrangement. Round rugs are beautiful but read better under a dining table or a single accent chair.

Color-wise with warm stone and wood tones – the rust suggestion above is solid. Vintage Turkish or Persian rugs in muted terracotta and warm tan are a great match for that kind of stone fireplace, and they have the added advantage of hiding wear really well. A natural jute or sisal also works nicely if you want the stone and built-ins to stay as the star without adding another pattern.

Avoid anything with cool gray or blue undertones – those will make the stone read colder and fight the whole cozy vibe you’ve got going.

  3. I’d choose a rug with cream or beige background to contrast against the dark flooring.

Good luck with it! The vintage Turkish/Persian route is especially fun since no two are the same – happy hunting.
