Does anyone have suggestions or inspiration photos on how to style my living and dining rooms? My husband and I are in disagreement on which tones won't compete with the red hue of the floor and neither of us are very interior design oriented.

  • We need all new furniture
  • The only items we have planned to come with us are a teak MCM sideboard and a vintage arc floor lamp
  • We both love MCM and cozy vibes but are unsure how to work that into the space
  • Both rooms have to have rugs (as per strata bylaws)

Please help us out 😭

Oh this is such a fun challenge – red-toned hardwoods are actually really beautiful to work with once you stop fighting them. The key is leaning into warm tones rather than trying to neutralize everything.

The teak MCM sideboard is a gift here – teak has that same warm orange-brown undertone that will echo the floor rather than compete with it.

For rugs, I’d look at jute or seagrass as a base option (natural fiber textures really ground an MCM space), or if you want something with more visual weight, a vintage Turkish or Persian rug with reds and golds in it will actually make the floors feel intentional rather than overwhelming. The trick is to pick up the floor color rather than contrast against it.

Color palette-wise: warm whites, cream, camel, and soft terracotta all play nicely. Forest green is also a gorgeous complement to red-toned wood floors – it reads very cozy and earthy without competing. I’d avoid anything with cool gray or blue undertones, which will make the floors look more orange by contrast.

For the MCM cozy vibe specifically – boucle or textured linen in warm neutrals on the sofa, a few throw pillows in mustard or forest green, and some plants will soften the whole space and make it feel really lived-in.
