Purchased a home that was a rental property for over a decade and then had a baby so no time to fix up much but this is driving me crazy.

On the fireplace brick, they used the wrong paint. It’s easy to chip off so I removed some to see the brick underneath.

Also, that’s our TV. We have no mantle. Overall it’s just a trashy mess.

Our walls are painted white and that probably won’t change for a while. We didn’t really have a style or theme yet as we were just trying to make the house livable by replacing all the wet walls… 🫠 but I love mid century modern, bo ho, scandi styles that are warm, cozy but not cluttered (despite what the current state is)

Would you paint the brick? Remove the paint? Any suggestions are welcome!! Thank you

Remove the paint! I personally would not repaint the brick as I love the red brick look

Remove the paint, put a much bigger art/photo above the tv

I like the green color. I’d go ahead and paint it. Removing paint is difficult, and you’ll still end up with bits of it showing. Then, find some curtains that coordinate with the green and put them up on either side, and it will instantly look much better. When you can, install a chunky mantle in a light golden wood tone.

Unless you remove the current paint, painting on top is going to be a bandaid at best. The original layer will still continue to peel off, and will probably have a bad texture since you’ll see all the unevenness.

So for a start remove the paint. Then I’d reassess and see what you think.

I’m sorry you’ve gotta deal with this, this is not a fun project.

I would also work to remove the paint from the brick and see if you like it. That’s a poor color choice along with the chipping paint, may be the reason you don’t like it.

Remove the paint – it seems as though you might be able to do so fairly easy – if it’s latex paint a gel stripper for brick would probably lift it “easily” (would take time, be a mess, but I think it would be worth doing. That flesh color of tan is horrible.

Clear it out completely of your current decor, strip the paint, and add mantel.
