So I had a colour consultation with Edward Bulmer. It might be my fault, but I trusted their judgement and went with the colour they suggested.

Update: now that it’s on the walls… I’m not loving it.

Has anyone else had a similar experience with a colour consultation where the end result just didn’t feel right? I’m starting to think it’s sometimes better to trust your own gut.

I was originally leaning towards a taupe (pictured). It might be a bit bland, but it also feels a lot less overwhelming than what I ended up with. What do you think?

Personally, I don’t like either look. The window is jeweltoned. Both the blue and taupe are muddy shades. As such, they don’t highlight the window in any way.

I would actually go with a clean white for the stairs. It will add brightness to the space rather than dulling it down, while still letting the window colors shine through.

Between the blue and the taupe, you are right. The blue is much worse as it fights with the wall color. It also makes the railings look unfinished and raw.

I think if you took away the carpet on the stairs either photo looks really nice

Interesting choice. It reads pink on my screen. Did he/she ignore your handsome window? Maybe it’s meant to pick up the color of narrow glass around each square? Unfortunately it makes handrails pop as orange. Im afraid i agree with your gut.

IMO If you want to keep that carpet the taupe is a nicer paint colour

But, I would say ditch that specific rug and find something that brings together the blue paint, the wood, and the stained glass. Easier said than done though lol

I feel for you, that’s disappointing! If you’re up to doing it again, I would either go with a bright white (as the other commenter suggested- I agree with their assessment!) or a bright, warm yellow. I think that would go well with the green rug and the rich tones of the window. I think the taupe is a little off, but I agree a lighter color would be less overwhelming

I prefer the taupe, but think a bright white might look even better. I would do a different carpet runner though – something red or mustard to bring out the colors in the stained glass.

Hmm, okay there is a lot happening here that is sort of distracting from just the wall color question.

Is the rug just to protect the stairs during painting?

It is a beautiful space you have.

The windows are very majestic and has quite a bit of grandeur. I almost feel like a dark brown would read almost as wood and add to that traditional beauty of the windows, but then that might clash with the light wood railings. Hmm.

I feel like all taupe kind of washes the space out, so I get where the color consultant was going when they advocated for darker, but as another commenter said, the blue is muddy and not jewel toned.

I think an actual jewel toned color might be the ticket.

Also, I know it’s a small detail, but the hardware for the stair railings is giving “IKEA” — there are a lot of other options and they aren’t too expensive or difficult to change out — I feel like that and a larger mirror could really help the space live up to its potential.

Of course I know you are in the midst of changing things up so this isn’t the finished product.

I do have to ask — what era is your home? When were the windows made?

Are we talking about the railing, if so I like the darker color.

I hate it! I’d have let the blue and changed the runner colour.

One other thing, assuming the far walls were not painted at the same time, the blue is making the walls look quite pink. A slightly different neutral tone could help bring things together

    God awful. Find someone else.

  12. The consultant chose the blue? Cause I can understand the logic of that choice considering de vitrals

    BUT

I don’t like it either lol

I would put a pure white on the walls and recover the woods to it’s original color.
And would change that carpet for sure. There you could chose one of the vitral’s color and make an accent

    Good luck

Changing the paint and the rug would be much easier.

Your stained glass should be the focus but the color choices & application actually competes and with detracts from the window.

My lizard brain is telling me there might be some nice wood under that paint, if it were me I would try to strip it and stain it a natural color to match with wood of the window frame.
