Decided to open something I've had sitting down for a while, and something new I've never tried for my birthday this year!

100% Aglianico, 13.5% abv, 24 months in barrel, 24 months in bottle.

Very harsh right out of the bottle, sour cherry, closed off. I was a little worried with the depressed cork it had gone off!

Approximately an hour on the counter, holy moly, made the difference! Full body, tannins are firm. In the glass for 3+ hours, oh boy, this is good stuff.

Lots of dark fruit on the nose. Black cherry. A little jammy almost, reminiscent of a Napa Cab nose, but to a lesser degree of black fruit. More like a mix of black cherry, raspberry, and dried cranberry.

Palate has a bit of a bite. A bit of sourness. Reminiscent of wild raspberries. I remember the path I walked to school had a raspberry bush my friend and I always pilfered from on our way to and from school. Get some spices on the palate too. I wish I had more bottles, would love to revisit this in like 5-7 years.

Thank you, this helped me. I tried Aglianico only once, and it was so unpalatable to me at the time that I couldn’t drink it. I’d like to revisit with better understanding about its peculiarities.
