I like them. I actually think painting them would truly be the landlord special, especially gloss white.
I think the only not-so-great part about them is the gap. Do you have a local joiner who could connect them? Even if the wood isn’t an exact match, it’s such a small piece that I doubt it will be noticeable.
If you’d like to bring life back to them, I honestly recommend staining them **or** Restor A Finish. Great stuff
It’s difficult to give you advice beyond that, as we can’t see the rest of your home or any of your personal style. I would recommend making a second post with additional pictures of your home, as much as your comfortable sharing. Plus photos of hand rails you like or find interesting from the likes of Pinterest.
Additional information is also helpful, like the year your home was built, and if you plan to keep in the theme of that. Do you prefer natural elements, or man-made elements? Things like that. Any information is better than none!

It seems that those handrails are pretty standard. A coat of paint could spruce it up perhaps opting for a fun color, like green or yellow.
