I found this bottle among some old stuff. It was laying down, but was leaking. The cork had fallen into the bottle.

It was horrendously smelly, but I’m wondering if a bottle from 1978 would ever have been drinkable today.

What did I miss out on?

Plenty of higher quality bottles from 1978 would be drinkable today if stored correctly. This is a pretty low end wine so would generally not last almost 50 years.

EDIT: leaving this comment up in shame but I did not look at who made this bottle lol

    Ouch.

This is one of the greatest wine producers on planet earth, and one of the greatest vintages of this wine according to the owner, Madame Lalou Bize-Leroy.

In short, yeah, this would’ve had a chance to stay drinkable — maybe even outstanding — in much better storage conditions.

This wine, in good condition, would probably fetch near $1,000 USD at auction.
