The Duseigneur Antares is a biodynamic wine from the Southern Rhone, a 60/40 Grenache-Mourvèdre blend from old vines in sandy soils. The name ‘Antares’ comes from the star in the constellation Scorpio, which fits the biodynamic ethos of the winery. Grenache goes into cement vats, Mourvèdre into old French oak demi-muids.
On the nose, licorice and violets. The palate follows with red cherries, blackberries, licorice, anise, and black pepper. It clocks in at 15% alcohol, but carries it really well. This wine needs food. A cheese pizza would be a simple vessel, but a sirloin steak or lamb would be even better. Had it with a raspberry cobbler topped with vanilla ice cream and that worked too.
