Short story: 8×10 or 9×12? The sizes and where they would come to are shown by the black circle/red outline and white circle/blue outline, respectively. Would offset the 8×10 to stick out more.

Long story: We are in the process of decorating after moving in and up next is a rug for this space. This space faces the entirety of the first floor which includes the dining room and main living room, both of which have a rug. It was suggested to us to use the same patterned rug from the main living room in this space to not make the space too busy. This rug only has fixed options of 8×10 or 9×12 (or 5×7.5). I feel like the 9×12’ comes too close to the fireplace, but offsetting the 8×10 would look awkward in the space.

Red. I once went for blue with the same style sofa and it didn’t look right.
I think it is because one sofa side is longer then the other and the red line size just made the different sides more balanced while the Blue Line size didn’t have that affect on it.

You don’t want the rug to be the same width as your couch, it’ll look funny. So definitely the blue.

  3. The red one but you move it over so that the edge starts in the middle of the ottoman part.

You’ll be much happier with the larger rug. The smaller one will make it look like a confined space and not part of the room.

  5. Bigger will look better, but I would also suggest trying some different orientations with your furniture so everything just isn’t shoved in a corner. One rule with rugs is you always want at least a foot of space between the baseboard and the start of the rug.

  6. Blue and centre the couch in that space and move it off the walls a bit

Blue. It does not come too close to the fireplace. What is the layout of the room? The couch looks off in the corner.

  8. Blue! Center the couch and move it away from the wall, move the bar cart and instead get a small side table or large plant by the window.

larger so there is comfortable floor space in front of the fireplace

Definitely bigger. I’d also recommend sliding your sectional off the wall about 4-6″ or so. It will help them room to feel more spacious and not so anchored down.
