Brought some friends out and wanted to show them some interesting stuff. At an Italian restaurant. Preview: the whites disappointed and the red was nice and sweet.
E. Guigal, Ermitage, Ex Voto, Vin Blanc, 2012, 13.5% abv.
Cork broke while opening, luckily the chef came out and extracted the lower half. Is this a sign of things to come?
Nose: light and reserved, dusty hay, old pink erasers, herbal/boiled pork, Asian rubbery corn. Wow, not what I expected…. no one knows what to think now.
Palate: medium body, oily, entry is old cake, bit of butter, mid palate shows sour brioche, sour vanilla, cream, back palate is reveals a dominant bitter tofu skin, green grapes, powdered sugar, bitter gingko nuts. Wow, it's obviously wine, but not too good.
Finish: medium, rubbery corn, hint of old moldy brioche, toasted gingko nuts. Horrible.
Vernacular: underwhelming.
Very disappointed in this, did I surpass some drinking window? Was 2012 that bad? I also have a feeling this suffered storage issues, like most "older" bottles in South Korea. The supply chain just wants to sell, they didn't care back then, some still don't care now. Got this on sale for KRW₩280K, or about USD$200, in Busan, South Korea. Regret.

Olivier Leflaive, Meursault, Vireuils, Chardonnay, 2018, 13.5% abv.
With the disappointing Ex Voto, I am a bit concerned. 2018 whites have not been good to me, just plain stuff. But this Meursault, better be good. Show me the VANILLA!!!
Nose: slightly reductive, old vanilla cream, white peppercorn, crispy citrus whatever that means.
Palate: medium body, entry is slightly effervescent, hints of old grape juice, plum juice, mid palate is a bit sour, hints of citrus-pear juice mix, hints of vanilla coming out. Simple and unimpressive. I keep thinking of their 2019 village Meursault.
Finish: short, citrus, pear.
Vernacular: nose shows primary and secondary with reduction all in humble form. Medium body, light to medium acidity, light secondary, minimal minerality. Short finish, minimal alcohol.
What happened to the new oak? Got this on sale for KRW₩250K, or about USD$180, in Busan, South Korea.

Domaine Rene Leclerc, Gevrey-Chambertin, 1er cru, Combe aux Moines, Pinot Noir, 2019, 13.5% abv.
Nose: expressive berries, red fruit, some currants as well, hints of chalk and coal briquettes, bit of paper dust. Not too shabby.
Palate: medium body, entry is strawberry and red berry oil, mid palate continues the red fruit cognac oil profile, dirty gravel, hints of iron, back palate has black pepper, spciey fruit. Relatively sweet and fruity, closer to the jam side than fruity potpourri. I like it.
Finish: short, berries, leather, light tannins, hint of iron, no alcohol.
Vernacular: lively primary nose, showing secondary as well. Medium body, moderate acidity, low to medium secondary, medium minerality, a bit linear, dare I say silky tannins? Short finish, dry, no alcohol.
The only good wine tonight. Sweet and lively. This producer has a good distribution of 2018-2021s, but I guess someone stopped buying. Got this on sale for KRW₩169K, or about USD$120, in Busan, South Korea. At that price, I will be looking for more… noticed their recent shipments were priced 2x higher.
