Bonneau du Martray is a fascinating producer to me, as they’re the only major Burgundy estate to exclusively make Grand Cru wine. They’ve chosen to focus entirely on two vineyards, Corton-Charlemagne for whites and Corton for reds, when they could easily expand their portfolio and sell at premium prices.

Bonneau du Martray is the largest owner of Corton-Charlemagne, and its CC has been regarded as one of the finest white wines on earth since it was first estate-bottled in 1969. Its winemaking is meticulous, fermenting grapes from each vineyard block separately to blend later and create the best wine possible. They only use natural yeasts, and elevage occurs in up to 30% new oak barrels for 12 months, with another 6 months aging in tank before bottling.

1982 is considered a good, though not necessarily *great* white Burgundy vintage. Then again, this is the flagship wine of an iconic producer, so I had high hopes when I saw someone brought this bottle to a charity event I attended…

**Tasting Notes:** Medium gold color that looks like a 15-20 year old white Burg, not a 40+ year old one. Intense, haunting nose of white peach, blossom, mushroom, lemon, and whiffs of honey. Full-bodied palate with lovely texture and acidity. Long, elegant, mushroomy finish. In one word: spectacular. One of the best white wines I’ve ever tasted.
