I actually have blackout curtains more for privacy than for keeping heat out. I used to have sheer curtains because they were pretty, but my bedroom window faces the street and my neighbors like to sit outside a lot, even at night when my bedroom light is on and I hate feeling watched.
However, it just looks so dead. I’d like to do something, but I’m not sure what. Should I invest in some sort of privacy blinds instead and get cute curtains?

gotta install some curtain rods
Blind for the window and curtains for decorative. Hang those curtains much wider and higher toward the ceiling

I think it’s because you’ve installed the curtain pole within the window frame. If you install it higher and wider, it’ll open up the space a lot more and look a bit better!
I agree with the curtain rod comments. Also layer my curtains on a double rod, I do a sheer white underneath and a colored blackout curtain overtop so when they’re open it looks more put together
Put up a nice curtain rod just above the window on the wall and hang the curtains there.
Curtains alone can look a little drab. Try a blackout roller shade and then hang decorative panels just for flanking/vertical styling and to help with the gapping of sunlight on the sides. Layering and having more color contrast will help with this. Also, these curtains absolutely do not work with the window well.

We JUST redid our windows. This may help as a visual of the type of thing you could do. You can do 2 panels, but I did an asymmetric look because of that abutment on the right of the window.
Find yourself a nice curtain rod and better looking curtains tbh.
Best curtain option would be to get a new curtain rail and new curtains. I would go for curtains that are more bright. You can get “darkening” curtain rails where the curtains hook around the end so they curve around and cover the edges. I don’t know if those would help with the privacy feeling too.
Since you said these are for privacy I’m guessing you keep them closed in the daytime too? In that case you might want to look into blinds or window films instead. Something that will let light in but that will stop people from being able to see in.
You can get loads of different window films including ones that are like a one way mirror, ones that look like frosted glass and colourful ones which can make rainbows in your room.
Ooh check this out -I installed a new blackout roller shade inside my window that i draw down and then i was able to pick any curtains i wanted and don’t have to worry about closing the curtains tightly/perfectly to completely block the light! There’s lot of options on Amazon. Search like cordless roller shade. The one i got is super compact and thin and fits inside the frame
I think if you painted the room white, then everything wouldn’t look so dark. That’s a very easy fix!
