First-time homeowner, not sure what to do with the blue tiles and this vintage kitchen. Should I keep it/paint it or remove everything?

The good news is that whatever you decide to do won’t be worse than this.

If you’re into the idea you should absolutely keep that tile! With some bulbous lighting and modern amenities it could be really far out.

If it were my kitchen, I would remove it. The grey grout is making it look dirty. Painting tile never looks good, so removing and replacing the drywall will be the quickest and cleanest. If you’re DIY handy, you can probably do it all yourself.

I kind of love it, and would be happy to live with it as is for a while, but I might take the floor to hardwood to balance it out. If you’ll be replacing the cabinets, you might find no tile/cracked tiles etc, so you’ll probably end up demoing it all. I think I would for a better cabinet layout and reno the whole kitchen because it could use space so much more efficiently than it is currently.

I would keep the tile and go for a retro aesthetic

Keep the tile, paint wall/ceiling / cabinets so the blue is put to advantage (think creams, ochre, dark green, bordeaux for more chic, or butter yellow, mauve, dark blue for whimsy), redo the grout !

If you add a couple blue decoration elements to your kitchen (think cabinet handles, drying cloths, lampshade, tablecloth…) it has so much potential to look intentional and timeless.

I would buy a house specifically for this kitchen. Keep the tile, and cherish it.

unless you’re made of money, you won’t be able to buy custom cabinets that nice that fit the area. the retro style goes with the tiles, too. use zep grout cleaner, re-caulk everything, fix the countertop by the sink (chipping paint over steel?), and throw down a kitchen rug that ties the blue in or leans into the vintage vibe. wood would add warmth to this space too like the other commenter said.
