Hi everyone,
I’m a winemaker from Bordeaux, and for years I’ve been frustrated by how subjective and marketing-heavy wine recommendations are. Whether it's Vivino ratings or big retailer algorithms, they rarely seem to match the actual chemical and sensory reality of what’s in the bottle.
To solve this, I’ve started analyzing wines in a laboratory to map their precise flavor profiles (measuring acidity, residual sugar, tannin structure, and aromatic intensity). My goal was to remove the "marketing noise" and find true matches based on analytical similarity.
I recently launched vinpop.nl in the Netherlands to test this, and I’ve integrated a scatter chart (see image below) to help users visualize where a wine sits compared to their preferences from a quiz.
I’m reaching out because I’d love to get the perspective of this community:
- Do you think an analytical/scientific approach makes more sense than crowd-sourced ratings (like Vivino)?
- Looking at this scatter chart, does it make the "logic" of a wine match clearer to you, or is it too complex?
- Our tests show that most "big retailer" recommendations don't actually share similar lab profiles. Have you noticed this inconsistency in your own experience?
I’m not looking to sell here—I genuinely want to know if this "data-driven" way of choosing wine resonates with serious enthusiasts or if you prefer the traditional storytelling.
Would love to hear your thoughts!
Cheers,
Adrien
