I want to hang this picture, I know it's not really the most "decor" picture, but it's a print that came with a vinyl set I ordered and it's from one of my favorite games that really resonates with me.
It's a 12×12 print, so i'd either need a 12×12 frame or a 16×16" frame to have a mat. Which looks better? With a mat is typically "fancier" isn't it?

Both can work but for that pic, I’d go the black frame – it really makes it stand out.

Both look great! I personally like the black frame without the mat best. It fits the vibe of the print and what the art style evokes.
It also depends on what other art you have in the space is like. If you have more of a polished look, the mat would work well in that type of environment.
In this case, the one without the mat seems striking to me.
