This is the first wine I’ve ever drunk that was aged more than 15 years. I bought a crate of this wine in the original wooden box from a woman who used to collect wine but was moving and trying to empty her wine cellar. I don’t know a lot about wine, but when I looked this one up online and did a bit of due diligence, I offered her €50 and she accepted.
The main reason I bought it is because it’s from my birth year. The fact that it’s a grand cru classé and that it seemed like a very good deal also helped. I’m only 21 years old, so I haven’t tried a huge variety of wines yet, but my friends and I organize small wine tastings every now and then. During a vacation to Italy, we also went to a wine tasting in the Franciacorta region. That’s where my love for wine really started.
After that trip, I mainly started drinking red wines from Italy and Spain. I haven’t had many red wines from France, so I really wanted to try this one. At first, I was a bit skeptical because of the price. But last Saturday, I opened the first bottle of this Moulin du Cadet 2004, and I was very surprised by it.
The cork was perfect but sadly, I forgot to take a picture. These are the tasting notes I got:
Color: see picture
Nose: plum, blackberry, earthy (a bit more fruity than I expected)
Palate: plum, black cherry, dark chocolate
Overall, I’d say this is a medium-bodied red wine with medium tannins, especially compared to many of the Riojas I’ve had before. Food pairing: a meaty bolognese style pasta dish.
I always enjoy reading your stories in this subreddit and will definitely continue to do so.
If you have any tips for someone who’s just starting to enjoy wine, please leave them in the comments.
