A double layer of drapes with an inner sheer layer is my first instinct, but I'm somewhat concerned with the location of the return vent below the window which would be blocked when closed — but maybe not a huge deal for a return duct? Any shades or blinds I imagine would be in 3 sections and would be quite a bit of work to size and install so I'd want to be confident in that choice. Looking for opinions.

I think Roman shades would look great. I would add a curtain rod with sheer curtains that I would probably leave open most of the time.

I had the same situation as you and was paralyzed on decision making for months. Our return vent was over to the left a little bit. We eventually went with your suggestion & it turned out fine. I didn’t have the money to spend on ridiculously expensive custom blinds. The drapes I got have some weight to them so the light, sheer linen layer don’t blow at all. We also have a sofa & sofa table backing up to it, so maybe the sofa table helps too.
Good luck – I’m going to follow your post to see any future inspiration!
