Husband and I decided to stay in and lay on the couch with our dog for Valentine’s Day, and what better way to enjoy a romantic night in than with an ‘07 Screamer. Gentle decant at 6pm, had our first glass at 7p, and slowly made our way through it over the course of the next two hours.
Color was deep and dark purple, almost black in the low light.
First sip: on the nose huuge and in-your-face bold (we both went “WOAH!” on first whiff), but still quite complex with the palate showing dark fruits like prunes, cassis, and dried blackcurrant, with little hints of leather and quite a bit of oak. Velvet on the tongue, and my husband and I both thought we got something like Cola. Verging on being a littttle too rich for me at first..
Over time the fruit relaxed a bit and the elegance really started to shine, still so rich but showing more tertiaries – the leather came out nicely with some tobacco and a little sous bois, stewed plum and espresso. We didn’t start eating dinner until we felt like we gave her the time and attention she deserved on her own.
Overall, 9.8/10. A gorgeous, velvety bottle but it’s definitely canonical Napa: big, rich, and hedonistic, which we know is not for everyone, but we happen to love. Cheers!
Ps we live in nyc and we “paired” it with our favorite pizza delivery. Because why not!
