Hi guys, I recently got a new house and plan on adding wall molding, wainscoting, bead board and crown moulding throughout the house. I will be doing this all with my boyfriend and we have access to all the tools we’ll need for real wood. I understand the materials are going to be costly. We plan on staying at this house for at least 5 years before we move further north and build a home elsewhere so eventually this house will need to be sold. My mom is convinced that what I’m wanting to add is not going to be to someone else’s taste. But I feel like what I’m adding is classic and sought after? While it won’t add cash value to the home, I think it would offer the same appeal as old homes do due to the craftsmanship that’s lacking in modern homes. Am I wanting to do too much? Is this a dumb idea that’s only going to waste my money? Yes I can live without it, but it would be disappointing not being able to add it to the first space that’s mine. I’ve attached some before and ai generated after photos for reference. Please tell me if I’m going overboard.

Your house, your decor. My mother doesn’t like my choices either, but she doesn’t live here.

Rule of thumb I’ve heard is that if you’re planning on being there for five years make the changes you want. The investment in your own happiness is spread out. You have no idea what fads will come and go, and do you want to be dissatisfied for five years?

I think you can do molding and wainscoting and it won’t be a detractor. I think it needs to match the vibe of your layout – which I think you’ve mapped out well. My one thought is that the wallpaper choice might be revisited.

And, think about furniture placement. I did have a friend question how she was expected to put her couch, bookshelves, etc in place.

If it brings you joy, call the cost of the upgrades a hobby and not home equity.  Then if it doesnt reflect in a future sales price, no worries.
