Teetotal-friendly alternatives could be Paris’s answer to five-year low in exports, reports Henry Samuel

Applause erupted when Emmanuel Macron cut a tricoloured ribbon to inaugurate Wine Paris, the world’s largest drinks fair.

Minutes later, he was handed a bottle labelled “For Sure” adorned with aviator sunglasses – a nod to his appearance in Davos last month when he wore shades to cover up a burst blood vessel in one eye.

“Brilliant,” he beamed. “France is the country of wine. We must be proud of who we are.”

  1. There’s nothing wrong with non-alcoholic options, but calling it wine is just plain wrong.
