Having my first old dry Riesling today. A 2002 Sybille kuntz wehlen sonnenuhr spätlese trocken from the mosel valley, 13% alcohol.
started out with saffron and yellow fruit.
Changing to honey, flowers, and slightly tropical with some petroleum and a fresh stoney/mineral finish.
oily and concentrated with rounded acidity.
tastes of honey, flowers, mango and melon. Light, fresh and elegant with powerful flavours. a long citrus finish ending with minerals.
The wine has grown on me over the hours spent tasting it. For 75$ it was worth the money spent to taste it.
the petroleum character is barely noticeable if it even is there? i know older Rieslings should get a noticeable petroleum character but is it because it's from the mosel less ripe grapes or is it because it's not a gewächs? or is age still a factor? this one feels less plausible.

Producers like Keller, Julian Haart, Egon Muller, Falkenstein, Markus Molitor, Max Kilburg, basically the top ones, make wine that minimizes or even eliminates the petrol (TDN) in their wines. I consider it to be a flaw to be controlled.
I also consider brett and VA to be flaws but a little bit can definitely make the wine more interesting so just because it’s a flaw doesn’t mean it’s bad.
