Hey everyone! I’m struggling to figure out a rug layout for my living room and could really use some creative eyes. I've attached photos of the space, and a floor plan with dimensions.

The Problem Eyesore:

My fireplace protrudes pretty far into the center of the floor, creating a weird "notch" in the layout. Because of this, a standard rectangular rug either hits the hearth or isn't large enough for all of my furniture pieces to fit on. If I get one long area rug, the spaces near the french doors on either side of the fireplace will be cut off and one of my side tables would potentially be off the rug completely. I looked into custom-cut rugs to fit around the fireplace, but I am not sure if I want to make that financial investment right now.

The Setup:

Seating: I will be keeping my gray and blue 3-seater couches where they are, and the gray ottoman I will also be adding a long chaise in the corner by the floor lamp (see poorly generated mockup of chaise placement, it will be angled into the corner facing the fireplace).

The current round coffee table will be replaced, so I have a blank slate for the center furniture.

What I’m looking for:

I'd like the entire room to feel like one cohesive space. Should I use multiple rugs? Maybe one for the main seating area and a separate one for the chaise? If so, which sizes do you think make sense. Any tips on sizes, shapes, or specific brands that play well with awkward layouts would be greatly appreciated!

Are you able to pull the couches off the wall some so they aren’t so far apart? I think one rug would be best but keep it rectangular and not cut around the fire place. I think Etsy sometimes has custom rug sizes so you could get something that doesn’t hit the fire place but also takes up enough length in the room to fit everything. The space really doesn’t feel awkward at all from the measurements or photos you provided.

You might could purchase a standard size rug that fits the longest length of the room and have a local binder cut it down to a smaller size to fit the space better. May have to call around to see if anyone local to you will do it for a reasonable price. I used to be in the carpet industry and the local shop we used had pricing around $2 a linear foot on a standard binding. Still not cheap, but at least a middle ground that’s not as pricey as a custom rug.
