Hi all!
I'm designing a new living room for my parents, and wanted to ask for your opinion and ideas. Here are two visualizations I am currently working with – which looks better to you and what would you change:
- Higher/taller furniture
- Shorter/lower furniture (with option to sit on it)
The requirements we are working with:
- Left wall has a fireplace (not shown in visualization), so can only use approx. 130cm from the far left corner towards the camera.
- There is a radiator under the window – hiding it with furniture means considering ventilation.
- 90% of the time, my father sits in the living room watching TV alone. We want a dedicated armchair for him, because sitting in the same spot on a sofa gets more expensive 🙂
- We are a big family with many visits and celebrations. When people come over, we want to have as much seating as necessary. The lower furniture creates additional seating with a few extra pillows. We can also bring in a few extra chairs in the open space on the left.
- Given the layout and with other rooms (kitchen behind the camera, another room/doorway on the left and on the right), I cannot think of a better arrangement of seating + TV + storage than this. But I may lack imagination 🙂
Really appreciate your thoughts and any ideas! Greetings from Slovakia 🙂

Are those cabinets built ins?
There isn’t a rug shown but I am assuming you don’t have one picked out yet(?)
Also is the fireplace used, ever? I am assuming not because of the proximity of the cabinets and the TV in the second photo. In that case, could you mount the TV over the fireplace? it seems a little awkward having the TV take up so much space because it’s diagonal positioned and when it’s off, there is big black rectangle blocking the sight-line the corner of the room. I am not a Feng shui expert but from what I know, it feels off-balance because of that.
There are mounts that let you adjust the TV’s position so if you do have a lot of guest, you can pull it away from the wall and tilt/pan it to any position you like to improve viewing angle.
Also, it looks like there a space behind the TV in your pictures. Is that for a recessed shelf that you’re not using or something?
For safety and heating efficiency, I try to avoid putting things near radiators.
Weird. I would put a second couch along the window if you need lots of seating.
Not keen on the slats. Doesn’t suit the room
