I can’t think of anything to put there other than stools. If you use it as storage I think it would just look messy. I can’t think of why someone wouldn’t perch on a stool if it was there. You could get shallow ones so they aren’t too impactful.

I use mine all the time for prep. If you are peeling apples to make a pie, or chopping lots of vegetable, they are great, especially if they have back to them. Do not get ones without backs. Also, friends family, will sit there, stay out of your way and talk to you while you prepare a meal. I have never, ever used bar stools for eating a meal. Never. It is not where I eat. It is where I prepare things to eat and eat elsewhere.
An alternative is to create shelving there. Store serving pieces or table linens or cook books.
