Fun story on this:
My father made this with a few of his buddies and some oversight from Nathan Fay in ‘85. Fay mostly refused to sell his grapes to anyone—after they did a bit of legal work for him, he relented and gave them some grapes from ‘Sugar Corner’ in what is now Fay Vineyard. 4 750s and 2 magnums left, so always a treat to drink.
Notes:
Gorgeous, almost Madeirized nose. Fruit is still there with some stewed cherry and licorice, but this is dominated by tertiary notes: tobacco, eucalyptus, cocoa, and a singing leather undertone. Really beautiful, savory character that reminds you of the low ABV Napa used to have. Definitely no longer at peak, but also not at all over the hill. Better from magnum. 94.
