I just purchased my first-ever home (well, 'condo') and am preparing to have it painted before I move in. Here is the situation:

  • The entire condo is painted grey. The photos were definitely brightened at some point, so take my word for it that the current grey on the walls is VERY dark and gloomy. I will be making all the walls brighter; that much is decided.
  • The photos in this post are only of the upstairs loft. It is this loft that I don't know what to do with.
  • Even with the current ugly grey walls, I love how unique the space feels with the 1/2 height walls and exposed girders along the ceiling.

I'm seeking advice on how I can paint this space to be nice and bright while still maintaining the industrial vibe. My first thought was to keep the girders and ceiling black but remove the black 'strip' along the top of the exterior walls. The walls would be painted brighter (likely off-white) all the way up, and the black girders would run directly into those light walls. There are also two sprinkler pipes/lines that run perpendicular to the girders, and I would like to paint them bright red.

^Thoughts on this idea? Perhaps you have a better idea? I'm open to basically anything at this point. Thank you in advance to any interior decorators with a talent to visualize spaces!!!

Honestly, your idea makes sense. Light walls + black girders keeps the industrial vibe without the gloom, and ditching that black strip will make the space feel way taller. Red sprinkler pipes could be a fun accent *if* you keep everything else pretty calm and neutral. I’d say go for it.

I think it looks pretty cool as is. Dependijg on what vibe you’re going for, some leopard print, wall art and mood lighting goes a long way. I would be happy with it as is. Interested in seeing how you transform that space.

There are many ways you could go. I think art deco colors in this space could be incredible. But it would take a lot of samples and color theory to pull it off to be more artist loft and less sesame Street.

Clean modern minimalism would work but it doesn’t feel lived in. Everything you are describing you dislike about the grey walls and the space makes me think you need a little more cozy ness.

If you wanted something more modern but still playful Japandi influenced could soften the space a lot.

Cozy minimalism with pops of desaturated color.
